The previous time that Reading came as close to promotion, yet fell at the final hurdle, as they did dramatically in the Championship play-off final against Swansea last May, it galvanized the club. Under Steve Coppell the following season, the Royals stormed to the title and subsequently graced the top division for the first time ever.
A selling club
It’s a success story that Brian McDermott will have to draw on to see his side follow in the footsteps of those from five years ago. Since that time however, we’ve seen several players who made reputations in Berkshire move on. First the old strike force, Dave Kitson, Kevin Doyle and Leroy Lita all left, and this pattern has continued.
Last summer it was Icelandic winger Gylfi Sigurdsson, clearly a cut above the Championship, who left the Madjeski Stadium in a big money move to Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim.
